Blake Kathryn is a multidisciplinary designer and content creator with a passion for pastels and neons, surreal shapes, and intertwining themes of nostalgia and vice. Based in LA, she’s worked with Adidas, Avondale Type Co, Giphy, Island Records and many more. We chatted with her in advance of Desert Glitch, the Sid Lee  Collective collaboration with 12 Galaxies that is premiering at Chromatic Festival.

Q:

How did you get involved with the 12 Galaxies collective?

A:

Brendan (from 12 Galaxies) reached out last year sharing a wonderful vision for a collective, experiential project spanning both 2D and 3D mediums. Often confined to a digital platform when sharing my work, the opportunity to transcend that limited viewing experience on a screen to something people can explore on a larger scale was too tempting to pass up. It was an extra dose of perfection that the direction I received touched upon my favorite subject to illustrate as well.

Q:

What’s in your inner space?

A:

Vibrant colors, shapes and all things wavy. In real life, I work within a multi-colored neon studio overlooking a pool. The colorful and ever-tropical vibes keep the inspiration flowing on a daily basis.

Q:

What are you contributing to Desert Glitch?

A:

My contribution is a fully immersible scene, Mantra. The viewer will be surrounded in a room of lips, one by one chanting to them. The lips continue this chant, reaching a unified state, before sending the spectators onto what's next.

Q:

Who or what are you inspired by these days?

A:

I have a on/on love affair with dreams that regularly fuels me. Over the past few weeks especially I've had intensely vivid and re-occurring nightmares, countered by near-psychedelic visual sequences that I've been mentally stripping apart.

On the conscious-side of life I love fine art ad illustrations from around the 70's to 90's. The commercial quality added to these otherwise gorgeous pieces creates a timeless, intriguing quality to an object or product that's likely obsolete today. There's something poetic about viewing artwork that survived its original purpose.

Q:

What’s next?

A:

Continuing to branch into motion design. I love the complexities and extra dose of details I can craft into still artwork – where the viewer's eyes have time to better notice the little details. However, the addition of movement breathes a fresh life into work that allows it to be interpreted or experienced in such a vast array of ways.
