The countdown continues! This January, Flanelle will be launching its first ever coffee-table book: the FlanelleBook, a meaty, slick 150-page collectible collection of fashion photography by world-class talent around the theme of Unity. Produced in collaboration with model agency Folio, the project combines the work of creatives who straddle fashion, advertising and art.

In the second of our series of sneak peeks and exclusive interviews (after Koty2 Photostorytellers), let us introduce the magical, magnificent Egor Tsodov – a photographer who’s unique ability to mix softness and the weird is as mysterious as it is addictive.

Q:

How did you approach the theme of the book: Unity?

A:

I think it’s about harmony and a state of tranquility or the idea of the contrasting, unexpected coming together, whether it be the mixture of hard and soft, light and dark, masculine and feminine. In my editorial, I went for the magical unity of a human being and nature.

Q:

What attracted you to the idea of shooting outside?

A:

I think the nature is my thing. Outdoor locations give me more options to tell the story. This time the story was about the witch….  not a witch how we usually see it in horror movies or tales, though. It’s a modern dark story about a girl-witch who is taking a walk through the lakes, woods, fields, and shows us the dark demonic side of her soul but in her regular look. It’s about her unity with nature. The shoot took place around Seven Lakes in New York.

Q:

What size of team do you typically work with?

A:

Honestly I don’t like to have a big team on a stage. I prefer to stay intimate: me, model, stylist and groomers. In that way I can get connected to the model and we both can feel more freedom to express ourselves.

Q:

How did you and the stylist select the clothing for this shoot?

A:

I gave Adrian the freedom to do everything he wanted. I directed him with a concept, location and the whole idea of the story, and he styled everything.

Q:

Can you describe your aesthetic?

A:

It’s very hard to explain your own work. My work is not about prettiness, sexiness and stereotypical beauty. I don’t expect everyone like my work and I’m okay with negative feedback. I’m also don’t retouch pictures. I know for many people it might sound weird, but I think you have to do your best to get result with no retouching afterwards. That’s what I see as real photography. I hate very retouched images with unreal lights and colors and “plastic” skin. Every birthmark, every wrinkle and every hair on your body is yours. Your nature and your beauty. Why would you want to change it?

Q:

How has your creative approach changed since you started working as a photographer?

A:

I think I can express myself more. Fashion was always a passion. Right now I do what I always wanted to do.
