FlanelleBook Collaboration Profiles: Koty 2 Photostorytellers

Share like ya just don’t care

Launching in January, the FlanelleBook is Flanelle’s first coffee-table tome: a 150-page collectible collection of fashion photography by world-class talent from around the globe, around the theme of Unity. The slick, thick-papered project mixes work by creatives who live and breathe advertisement to artists who specialize in fashion, all hand selected by the Flanelle team. With models provided exclusively by Folio, the project is artsy through-and-through.

Watch this space for a sneak peek over the next few weeks, including exclusive interviews with some of the talent involved. For starters: Koty 2 Photostorytellers, a Polish photographic duo you really need to know.

Q:

Your name is great. Can you introduce yourselves a little?

A:

We are Bibi and Jacob. Everybody knows us as Koty 2. Koty 2 means two cats.

Q:

Can you talk about the role of storytelling in your work?

A:

Well, in our work we want our pictures to have a story, tell something about something. Even simple projects can tell you a story about the photographed subject. Each element of the picture – the colour, styling, model’s emotions – is an element by which we try to create a story.

Q:

How did you form as a photographic duo?

A:

Completely naturally and wonderfully: we’re a couple.

Q:

What was your approach to the theme of the book: Unity?

A:

We wanted to show symbolically the unity of man and the world of nature.

Q:

You did that in part by using layers, by placing flowers and botanical elements between the lens and the subject. Is that a technique you’ve used before?

A:

We always like to experiment with new techniques in our photography, but this technique when the object is located between the model and the camera we used probably for the first time for the FlanelleBook.

Q:

How would you describe your aesthetic?

A:

It can be described in five words: softness, simplicity, emotionality, softness, naturalness.

Q:

Do you have a shoot-day ritual?

A:

We always start a photo shoot in the morning and always start by talking about everything with the models involved.

Q:

How do you get models to do what you want?

A:

By magic.

Q:

Do you have a muse?

A:

Yes, but it’s our little secret.
